Converts PDF to an editable Word (DOCX) document in three ways.

  • Visual copy — perfect formatting preservation, each page as an image in DOCX
  • Editable text — headings, bold, italic, font sizes + images from PDF
  • TXT — plain text without formatting
  • Files are not uploaded to a server — processing happens entirely on your device

PDF to Word Converter Online

Free online converter for transforming PDF documents into editable Word (DOCX) format. The tool achieves approximately 85% accuracy in preserving original formatting: tables, lists, fonts, images, and multi-column layouts are transferred to Word with minimal loss. A "visual copy" mode is available for scanned documents, and TXT export for extracting plain text.

Conversion Modes

The tool offers three conversion modes depending on the document type and desired outcome:

ModeDescriptionProcessingBest for
Editable textFull server-side conversion: text, tables, images, and formatting are transferred into an editable DOCXServer-sideText-based PDFs with tables, lists, multi-column layouts
Visual copyEach PDF page is rendered as an image and inserted into DOCX. Appearance is preserved at 100%, but text cannot be editedIn browserScans, PDFs with complex graphics, documents where exact appearance matters
TXT exportExtracts only the text layer without formatting. Fast and convenient for copying textIn browserQuick text extraction, preparing data for analysis

How to Use

  1. Upload a PDF — drag and drop a file into the upload area or click the file selection button. Maximum size is 20 MB.
  2. Review the preview — the tool will display page previews, page and image count, and detect whether the PDF contains a text layer.
  3. Choose a mode — "Editable text" for full conversion, "Visual copy" for exact appearance reproduction, or "TXT" for plain text extraction.
  4. Start conversion — click the convert button and wait for completion. A progress bar will show the current processing stage.
  5. Download the result — the finished DOCX or TXT file will be available for download immediately after conversion.

Features

  • PDF preview — view document pages before conversion to make sure you uploaded the correct file.
  • Document analysis — automatic detection of page count, image count, and text layer presence to help choose the optimal conversion mode.
  • Table preservation — the converter recognizes table borders and transfers them to Word while preserving cell structure, merges, and alignment.
  • Image transfer — illustrations, logos, and photos from the PDF are inserted into DOCX with preserved position and size.
  • Multi-column layout — text in multiple columns (magazine layouts, academic papers) is correctly recognized and transferred.
  • Conversion progress — a visual progress bar shows the current server-side processing stage.
  • Privacy — uploaded files are processed on the server and automatically deleted immediately after conversion. We do not store your documents.
  • No watermarks — conversion results contain no watermarks, ad inserts, or other modifications.

When to Use

  • Editing contracts — received a contract as PDF, need to make edits, add conditions, or correct details before signing.
  • Working with invoices — accounting departments often receive primary documents as PDF. Conversion allows quick data transfer into custom templates.
  • Preparing study materials — students and educators can convert textbooks and handouts for citing, note-taking, or creating presentations.
  • Updating a resume — your old resume is saved only as PDF, but you need to update work experience and skills.
  • Document translation — before sending a document to a translator, it helps to convert PDF to Word so the translator works with an editable file.
  • Extracting data from reports — tables from PDF reports can be transferred to Word, then copied into Excel for further analysis.

Limitations

PDF is a fixed-layout format not originally designed for reverse conversion. Even the best tools cannot guarantee 100% accuracy:

  • Complex layouts — documents with many overlapping elements, angled text blocks, or non-standard positioning may convert with distortions.
  • Embedded fonts — if the PDF uses rare fonts not available on the system, Word will substitute the closest alternatives, affecting appearance.
  • Scanned PDFs — "editable text" mode only works with PDFs containing a text layer. For scans, use "visual copy" or first apply OCR recognition.
  • Forms and input fields — interactive PDF forms are converted as static text; interactivity is lost.
  • Protected PDFs — documents with password protection against copying/editing cannot be processed.
  • Limits — maximum file size is 20 MB. Guests get up to 5 conversions per day, registered users up to 20.

FAQ

Can I convert a scanned PDF?
In "editable text" mode — no, because scanned PDFs lack a text layer. For scans, use "visual copy" mode — each page will be inserted into DOCX as an image. If you need editable text from a scan, first run the file through our OCR recognition tool.

How accurately is formatting preserved?
The converter achieves approximately 85% accuracy for typical documents. Text, paragraphs, headings, and basic tables transfer well. Complex elements — nested tables, multi-column layouts with text wrapping — may require manual adjustments after conversion.

Is it safe to upload confidential documents?
Uploaded files are processed on the server and deleted immediately after conversion. The connection is protected by HTTPS. For highly confidential documents, use "visual copy" or "TXT" mode — they work entirely in the browser without sending the file to the server.

What are the conversion limits?
Unregistered guests can convert up to 5 files per day in server mode. Registered users get up to 20 files per day. Maximum file size is 20 MB. Client-side modes (visual copy and TXT) have no daily limits.

Why do extra spaces or line breaks appear in the result?
PDF stores text as a set of individual characters with coordinates on the page, not as a continuous stream. The converter has to "guess" where one word ends and another begins, where a line break is a paragraph end versus just a column break. In most cases this works correctly, but artifacts sometimes occur.

Can I convert Word back to PDF?
If you have a Word document and need to create a PDF from it, use our Word to PDF tool. For extracting only text without formatting, try PDF to Text.
